Marko Popovic Profile (English Version)

Name: Marko Popovic
Birth date: 06/12/1982
Birthplace: Zadar (Croatia)
NBA Position: Point Guard
Height: 6-0 / 1.82 m
Weight: 165 lbs / 75 Kg.

Current European Team: Pamesa Valencia (Spain).

NBA Comparison: Raúl López, Damon Stoudamire.

Nowadays, Marko Popovic plays in the “Liga ACB” of Spain for Pamesa Valencia. There he is the back up point guard for Argentina’s national player Alejandro Montecchia. From Montecchia –member of the Argentinean team that grabbed the second spot in the last World championship in Indianapolis- he can gain a lot of experience. This season he will also play the Euroleague with Pamesa Valencia against the best players in Europe.

Strengths: Marko is maybe one of the most talented young guards in Europe. Among his best abilities are his quickness and his wide range shooting. When facing the opposite defense he is capable both of dribbling fast into the paint and of shooting a long range three-pointer. He can go for a lay-up even against the biggest centers, taking full advantage of his quickness. A teammate’s screen will always be profited by Popovic. Otherwise, when he feels that his pair lets him some little space, has no doubt in trying a jumper, normally from beyond the arc. He is also a good free throws shooter. His ball handling is also very good; he can dribble very easy to the basket and has good passing skills, perfect for running quick fast-break transitions.

Weaknesses: The most important weakness of Marko Popovic is his size. At 6-0 he is maybe a very tiny point guard. Besides, he also lacks the necessary strength to face NBA guards. He has to improve a lot his defensive skills in order to be able to play the game at NBA level. Perhaps when he acquires more experience he will be able to compensate his weaknesses with his intelligence, playing then the kind of game that small point guards like John Stockton or Raúl López play in the NBA. He must also improve his abilities to lead his teammates on the court, to run his team.
